Local Produce
Commonly referred to as the “food bowl of Australia”, Griffith and the surrounding region is home to an extremely vast and diverse range of primary industries.
Initially known for dryland cropping and livestock production, the Western Riverina region became prominent in rice, cereals, citrus, grapes and fruit production. Recently producers have further diversified into high value, long yield crops such as nuts, cotton, olives and vegetables.
Prune production is one of the very few Australian horticultural sectors that is continuing to grow, with farmers planting new trees every year and new methods of drying, including solar drying tunnels, being adopted.
Wine production, ranging from boutique wineries to some of the largest in the world, has also played a significant part in our region’s growth.
Pick up some local produce from the Sunday Rotary Market or pop into the Visitor Information Centre to purchase some local packaged produce to take home. Also, many of Griffith’s restaurants and cafés incorporate the region’s local produce in their menus.
